The Lunar Triad

The Lunar Triad of Hecate, Selene and Artemis represents the changing and complex nature of the moon, as well as the different aspects of femininity in ancient Greek culture.

Each goddess was associated with a different phase of the lunar cycle, and as such was worshiped during different times of the month.

This triad shows us the importance of the moon in ancient Greek culture, and how it was a symbol of power and transformation, as well as femininity and fertility.

Hécate - Ἑκάτη

Hecate (Ἑκάτη / Hekátê)

Hecate, also known as the Crossroads Goddess, was strongly associated with the new moon. The new moon is considered a time of transformation, making it an ideal time for magical practices. Hecate being considered the goddess of magic, she was often worshiped during the new moon, when she was believed to be at her most powerful.

Séléné - Σελήνη

Selene (in ancient Greek Σελήνη / Selếnê, "moon").

Selene was considered the personification of the moon, and was therefore associated with the full moon. The full moon was considered a time of fertility and feminine power. Selene was believed to be a powerful goddess and honored during the full moon for her symbolic power and connection to femininity.

Artemis - Ἄρτεμις

Artemis (Ἄρτεμις / Ártemis)

Artemis, on the other hand, has been primarily associated with the crescent moon, which is the point in the lunar cycle between new moon and full moon. This is the time when the moon is in transition, as is Artemis, who is considered the goddess of the hunt, nature and the wilderness, and as such is considered to be associated with the transformative aspects from the moon.
